Starring stage and screen favourite James McAvoy, Martin Crimp's new adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s 1897 comedy Cyrano de Bergerac will arrive at the Playhouse Theatre in November for a limited run. Cyrano de Bergerac is a soldier, a lovestruck poet and a musician. He falls for a beautiful woman, Roxanne, but fears his larger-than-average nose will prevent him from wooing her. Will his perceived ugliness stop him from being loved? Directed by Jamie Lloyd - whose working relationship with James McAvoy is well established, having previously directed him in Macbeth and The Ruling Class.
The cast was amazing particulary Anita-Joy Uwajeh as Roxanne, her change as a character was sincere. James McAvoy as Cyrano was one of the finest things I've ever seen, when he delivered monologues, I couldn't blink, I couldn't breathe, he was spellbinding. It was the last thing I saw before lockdown and having already loved it and wanted to see it again, it will have a special memory for me for yaers to come.

Came from Germany to see the play and I´m still overwhelmed... Too little space and my English not good enough to express. Thank you to all people involved for an extraordinary evening that will stay in my mind for a long, long time...

Juvenile, cliched, falsely woke. The story and James mcavoy deserve better.

Mesmerising, sexual, poetic performances. The word play (poetry) is smugly clever and I was completely drawn in.

A totally immersive experience. Your eyes and ears could never afford to waiver from attention as the cast spoke and moved with a masterly speed showing the audience a depth rarely seen on stage. The emotion of the piece brought tears to my eyes as much as the eyes of the actors. The physicality also held you spellbound. The highest praise to the entire cast.

From the moment it started... untill the end... it was an amazing play. I really think Jamie Loyd got it perfectly. All actors showed extrem proffesionalism, there where moments to cry, to laugh and grief. A big thank you to all members of the cast for their performances. Especially to James Mcavoy, who made me fell in love with an idea of blind love.

The entire production *shimmers* with raw beauty and my heart is still sore. I expect it will be for a long, long time.

One of the best stage shows that I have seen in a long time: comedy, tragedy, romance, heroism. A fantastic way to update the original to the 21st century too. The minimalist set truly lets the word rule.

Just saw this, streamed live. What an astonishing privilege to be in the front row of something so historic. Still cannot speak: James MacAvoy's performance was both breathtakingly clever and unutterably moving. The ensemble are great, and the production and script so new and vivid. Thank you for the experience.

My favourite production of the year so far. I’m not a big fan of the current trend of actors speaking their lines through microphones but in this updated version it made sense. James McAvoy was electric. So much energy but brilliant and moving in the tender moments too. Loved it!

Was blown away by the performances tonight! LOVED the diversity on stage - all plays should be so. Writing is brilliant. JM was captivating, and the audience’s audible reactions proved he commanded everyone’s emotions in the theatre. Recommended to everyone, especially people who love words.

Wow! James McAvoy was exceptional in a truly unique version. Roxanne also was excellent. We loved it. Our one complaint was that two Women (G15 and G16) were filming throughout the first act. The staff only intervened once which didn’t stop them. It was very distracting and in a way ruining. They should have been evicted.

A masterpiece on every level, compelling, beautiful and hypnotising. Beg, steal or pay for a ticket before it ends, I am seeing it for the second time this week and can't wait. GENIUS

The worst thing about the play is that it made me realise that I can't watch McAvoy play every second of my life. My expectations were high, but the actors overdelivered million times. And why is nobody speaking about Tom Edden (De Guiche)? He was so refreshing!

Loved it! Wasn't really sure what to expect, but it was fantastic. The acting was phenomenal, the script hilarious, moving and very clever. Bought standing tickets (which I was sceptical of) but had hardly any problems with view. Never seen anything like it, I've been recommending it to anyone who will listen.

Very funny and enjoyable, up to the recurring use of the F word by Roxane to describe love and the kiss between Cyrano and Christian. Both seriously clashe with the integrity of the story and the essence of both characters. Whoever’s desire it was to be seen as “gay cool” and in tune with angry feminism took something away from the play that could otherwise have been simply perfect.

Oh my. This production slowly drew me in. By the end of act one I was hooked and smitten by JM. I’d go again if I could afford it. There was too much to take in so I had to buy the script! Might not be everyones bag but I loved, loved, loved it.

I still can't find the words to describe how amazing that was. Jamie Lloyd is a genius. I laughed, I cried, I stared in awe. I flew in from Israel to watch this and I don't regret a single dollar spent. Highly recommend.

Saw this play on 5th Jan and I must say I was extremely impressed by both the screenplay and the different perspective (minimalistic, focused on the acting skills and smart word play and not the decor) this classic play was put to stage as well as the truly amazing performances by all the cast members. It is definitely one of the top 5 plays I've ever seen, highly recommend.

**For those who complained about not being able to see anything from the grand circle, we were 2nd row from the back and could see almost everything with little issue. They were exactly what we expected from *grand circle* tickets. A phenomenal performance from the entire cast and a wonderful reinterpretation of the play. We would like to mention the wonderful FOH staff in the theatre too. We arrived in through (mostly) no fault of our own 3 minutes before the performance was due to start, suitcases in tow. The staff were incredibly helpful and made sure we were in our seats (in the grand circle) before the house lights dimmed.

Incredible script and performances. Can’t say enough how much I enjoyed this interpretation. However DO NOT book the upper circle, even in seats that are not Restricted View you’ll miss 2/3 of the play as much happens so far downstage that it’s impossible to see if you’re high up. Shame.
